May 24, 1941, the steamship Conte Rosso, an ocean liner requisitioned by the fascist regime during wartime, is sunk by a British submarine off the coast of Syracuse. 1297 soldiers died at sea that night. It was one of the greatest disasters in the history of the Italian Navy.
