Native Beat
Playing by striking, hitting, shaking, and rubbing with hands or proper instruments is the musical expression that has accompanied humanity since prehistory and probably represents the most archaic and original mode of the art of music in all cultures of the world.
“NativeBeat” is a project dedicated to the creation of an orchestra of young musicians specialized exclusively in playing the oldest musical instruments: percussion, that is, whether drums or bass drums, triangles or cymbals, timpani or vibraphones, xylophones or castanets… and so on.
Founded by Alessandro Perissinotto, this ensemble always involves different musicians. The name “NativeBeat,” which literally means “Native Beat,” was chosen to synthesize the originality of this musical formation. Secondly, it was deemed appropriate to use the English language for its undisputed universality in communication, just as music is the most universal artistic form. Finally, regarding the meanings of the two words used: “Native” in English means native, indigenous, local, but also original, authentic, natural; “Beat” in English is a verb that means to strike, to hit but, conversely, is also a noun that indicates the beat, the rhythm. Thus, the project of “NativeBeat” is explained: to authentically and originally re-propose the sounds and melodies of various musical forms through the beat and rhythm of the oldest instruments, involving young musicians native to the territory.
The repertoire spans from the great composers of percussion literature such as Rosauro, Reich, Abe, to contemporary and pop musicians like Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius, Mike Stern, and many others.
