It hasn't been easy to take hold of the memory of an important father. But it hasn't been particularly complicated, actually. It was enough to choose a path and walk it with conviction, as I learned from the experience of the Journey along the Via Francigena.
Since I was little, I have been “bread and restaurant.” I have witnessed, almost from the beginning, the unfolding of an exceptional adventure called Trattoria dall’Amelia, fascinated by literary dinners and the cultural figures that enlivened them, serving drinks at the G7 table at Palazzo Grassi, fish San Pietro for Pope Wojtila, organizing banquets in sumptuous palaces in Venice, accompanying my father for work in Italy and abroad, … and what I did not see was recounted to me.
In this book, I have interspersed my memories with those narrated by my father, who before leaving wanted to have his memories engraved on some audiocassettes, from childhood to his final years. I tried to sketch the story of a brilliant and visionary entrepreneur in the expanding Italy of the economic boom, who moved skillfully and originally between cuisine and culture, with many curious and interesting stories.
As for me, for a long time in the eyes of the world I was “fio de Dino,” and with this book, I have come to terms with the family history, taking on the role of the one who wanted to tell it. Marco Boscarato
