On Sunday, April 4 at 8:45 p.m., the show "Romeo and Juliet" will take place as part of the 50th Season of Prose at the Comunale Dino Buzzati Theater.
Paolo Valerio maintains a faithful adherence to the original text by William Shakespeare but sets the story in a powerful contemporary war setting, strongly inspired by the tragedy of the Balkans in the 1990s and the true story of Admira and Boško, the famous “Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo.” The two protagonists belong to opposing factions within a brutal ethnic conflict, but they fall in love and marry in secret. The surrounding violence culminates in duels that lead to Romeo's exile and Juliet's desperate plan of a faked death. Due to a tragic miscommunication typical of the chaos of war, Romeo believes the bride is dead and poisons himself, prompting the girl to suicide upon awakening.
