Return Beyond the Peaks, from January 9 to 18, 2026. The theme of the 29th edition is "Snow?". A rich program of events awaits you!
On Saturday, January 10 at 16:30, at Palazzo Crepadona, there will be a scientific/outreach meeting titled "Snow?".
Snow is not only a literary subject or a sloped surface to slide on, but also a subject of study dealt with by nivology and hydrology, sciences that examine its multiple meteorological and physical aspects. These disciplines study snow as a material in constant transformation, as well as its crucial role within the water cycle.
Snow is indeed a fundamental water reserve that accumulates during winter and is gradually released during the summer months. This slow and steady release is essential in supporting summer consumption. The metamorphoses within the snow cover can also compromise its stability, increasing the danger of avalanches. The nature of the snow cover is today clearly affected by global warming, which is changing its quantity and distribution throughout the Alpine region and beyond.
Experts Francesco Avanzi (CIMA Foundation), Giacomo Bertoldi (EURAC, Bolzano), Francesca Carletti (Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) in Davos, Switzerland), and Mauro Valt (ARPA Veneto) will discuss all of this, coordinated by Federico Balzan (Region Friuli Venezia-Giulia).
Event organized in collaboration with ARPAV.
