"The Calapranzi"
In a dingy basement, Ben and Gus, two professional hitmen, wait to carry out their next job. Any moment now, a designated victim should walk through that door. Ben, authoritative and seemingly unruffled, reads the newspaper; Gus, restless and impatient, fills the wait with questions to which he rarely gets answers. Then, suddenly, an old dumbwaiter — the calapranzi — comes to life and begins to produce mysterious and absurd food orders. There shouldn't be anyone in the building. Yet, upstairs, someone seems to be waiting. In a crescendo of tension, amidst surreal dialogues, silences, and a comedy constantly laced with a sense of threat, what appeared to be just another job takes on increasingly enigmatic contours. With "The Calapranzi," Harold Pinter constructs an essential and ruthless theatrical mechanism, in which waiting becomes a battleground between obedience and doubt, power and fear, ultimately questioning the very roles of the two protagonists.
