The Castelir, also known as Castelat, is a ruined castle located northeast of the village of Villa di Cordignano.
Castelir derives from the Latin “castellarium,” a term used by the Romans to refer to masonry constructions that were built between Veneto and the nearby Friuli Venezia Giulia. Other sources claim that Castelir was owned by an indigenous population from Istria that made its way to Cordignano and came into contact with the Ancient Veneti. An archaeological study conducted on-site in the 1980s uncovered many artifacts from various eras. In 1983, a foundation two meters wide formed by stones arranged in a certain pattern was discovered. To the east, there is an embankment made from earth removed from the summit. Given the state of the Castelir and the sparse information available, it is not possible to definitively establish the original features of the structure.
