Castello di Castelnuovo

Castelnuovo of Quero is located along the old road on the right bank of the river Piave, near the village of Quero in the direction of Feltre.

The road passes right under the central body with a large arch that, in the past, closed with two doors and two drawbridges, and is still flanked by two massive towers of different heights. Centuries later the imposing building, which was bombed in 1917 during the Great War, was purchased in 1924 by the Somaschi Fathers who still run it today as a House of Prayer and Religious Center.

Castelnuovo has lost over the centuries its original furnishings and today has inside floors not original since the entire building was renovated in the 1960s. The towers are divided into several floors; the tower on the side of the mountain has five flights of stairs, while the one towards the river four. The castle is open to the public and is easily accessible along the old Feltrina road that is located just after the village of Quero at the railway station Quero-Vas.

The current Castle, located right on the bank of the Piave a few meters from its course along the road Feltrina, was built in 1376 by the will of the captain general of the Republic of Venice, Jacopo Crivelli, instead of an ancient and dilapidated fortress already existing perhaps in Roman or Lombard times.

The structure has always been a fundamental point of contact between the Valbelluna and the Marca Trevigiana thanks to its strategic position, serving as a defensive bulwark and a point of control of river traffic on the Piave. The castle was managed by trusty families; the most famous castellan was Girolamo Miani who in 1511 distinguished himself for the strenuous defense of the manor, and the Venetian Republic, and taken prisoner by the imperial armies of Maximilian of Austria.

As the legend says, Miani was freed by the miraculous intercession of Our Lady and following this event he gave himself to religious life and founded the religious order of the Somaschi Fathers.
