The devotion to St. Libera was deeply rooted among the local populations and, according to tradition, dates back to a time before the 12th century.
In ancient times, there was a small chapel in Fontigo, on the banks of the Piave River, where a fresco depicted the image of the Virgin Mary, and at her feet, kneeling in a posture of prayer, was young St. Libera.
The chapel was illuminated at night to warn the "rafters," who descended with their loads from the Val Belluna, of the danger of protruding boulders in that area. In 1894, the chapel was replaced by a modest chapel in a location closer to the village. Inside, it housed a painting of St. Libera, created by the painter Giovanni Zanzotto from Pieve di Soligo.
In 1912, the population of Fontigo, noticing that the chapel was too cramped to accommodate the many devotees who gathered there on various occasions, decided to build a larger and more dignified small sanctuary in the same location.
