The Isola dei Morti (Island of the Dead) is a small area in the middle of the river between the northern side of Montello and the town of Moriago della Battaglia. The name refers to the macabre discovery, in the days following the Final Battle in October 1918, of thousands of lifeless bodies of Italian Arditi, dragged here by the current or hit by Austro-Hungarian bullets while trying to reach the other side. This island immediately became a place where the great sacrifice of these soldiers was celebrated in the last days of the war. In the 1920s, a stone pyramid was erected with a cross on top made from barbed wire and a helmet. On the four walls were placed stone plaques bearing the poem "The prayer of Sernaglia", composed by Gabriele D'Annunzio in 1918.
After the Second World War, the parish priest of the time, Don Pietro Ceccato, also proposed the construction of a sanctuary to dedicate to the Madonna, a project that was accepted by the bishop of Vittorio Veneto and which saw the light in 1965.
Finally, in 1991, the Artiglieri Association of Moriago della Battaglia inaugurated a second monument entitled "Life for Peace", the work of the sculptor Mario Balliana. All of this is visible in the center of the Island, after crossing a beautiful avenue in the shade of large trees and following the local signs that provide further information on the history of this place.
There is a picnic area with benches and tables.
