Inaugurated on October 2, 2015, the Ferrata della Memoria is perfectly equipped and safe, with iron steps and ladders in the most challenging and vertical passages. The verticality of this via ferrata is particularly notable in the initial part.
The via ferrata, quite demanding at times exposed, with a start in a tunnel and slippery sections, allows you to penetrate the Vajont Valley and admire the dam from a different and suggestive angle.
Access: To reach the parking lot of the via ferrata, follow the provincial road No. 251 that leads from Longarone to the village of Erto. At the sixth bend, you will see a sign on the right indicating the via ferrata. The access to the route is very simple, following a long tunnel that leads to the metal cable of the via ferrata. The descent is made by following the path that leads to Codissago, until you reach the bend in the provincial road that you follow downhill for about 400 meters, thus arriving at the parking lot.
Initially, you descend for a few meters until you reach the spectacular channel that carried water from the Vajont stream to the paper mill of Codissago as early as the late 1800s.
You continue along this channel until you find a first tunnel of about 150 meters for which it is advisable to bring a flashlight, followed by a ledge with a via ferrata cable, another shorter tunnel, and another exposed but easy ledge. At the end of the ledge, you reach a ladder that marks the beginning of the difficult part with the first 100 meters being demanding and exposed. Soon after, thanks to a series of ledges, you arrive at an intermediate shelf, where the second vertical section begins, always difficult but less demanding than the previous one, before continuing onto another ledge to the right and a second ladder. From here, you follow a notch in the rock, built to allow the cable car that transported concrete from Longarone to the Vajont dam construction site, from where you can reach path 380 in 5 minutes, which ultimately leads to the Vajont dam with the possibility, by turning left, to return to the starting point. Overall, there are 600 meters of via ferrata on the initial channel, followed by another 60 in vertical.
