Ferrata Antonio Berti

The natural continuation of the Zacchi and Sperti routes leads to the summit of Schiara along the western ridge, which requires significant technical and athletic preparation.

Via Ferrata: Before reaching the Bivacco Dalla Bernardina, we follow the path to the right across rocks and meet the start of the Ferrata Berti. We immediately climb a first metal ladder, followed by a stretch of ledge that leads us to a fairly stepped gully, which we ascend first on the right side and then moving to the left side. We climb a ladder with a slight overhang (key step) and completely ascend the gully, followed by a rather narrow chimney to the left that is very beautiful and climbable. We exit the chimney, walk a stretch of connecting path surrounded by rocky spires, and to the left, we move under a moderately sloping wall of about twenty meters to ascend using the good grips available.

We are now on an airy ridge section with some decidedly exciting and demanding passages. We ascend a ladder to reach a series of stanchions and navigate around a corner with a strong exposure. We now traverse the equipped ridge section climbing until we reach the end of the equipment. We follow the cairns and arrive at the summit of Schiara (2565 - 1h from the start - 6h 30' total), where the summit cross was cut by some vandals a few years ago.

History: The Berti via ferrata was inaugurated in 1959 as a continuation of the Ferrata Zacchi to reach Schiara from the western side. The route is dedicated to the memory of Antonio Berti, an academic of the CAI, a soldier in the Great War, and a mountaineer. Before and after the two conflicts, Berti stood out for having collected detailed reports on climbing routes in the Eastern Dolomites, with the notable work "Dolomiti Orientali" featured in the Guide to the Mountains of Italy..
