Chiesa di Tignes

The parish church of Tignes is dedicated to Saint Martin. Records of the first church in Tignes date back to the early 1500s. However, this church was also destroyed by the earthquake and was rebuilt starting in 1609. The church was also detached from the bell tower, which at that time all churches incorporated. The bell tower is a smaller copy of the bell tower of Pieve, and it also did not suffer serious damage from the earthquake. The new church was positioned with a new orientation, then surrounded by a perimeter wall that delineated the cemetery, which was a feature of almost all ancient churches. The church, which originally had a single nave, was later added an apse after the earthquake of 1936, containing the only altar made of worked and painted stone. A few years later, a small sacristy was also added. Above the altar, there is a beautiful altarpiece from the 1600s depicting the Madonna in throne between Saint Martin and Saint Anthony the Abbot, an unsigned painting attributed to Anonimo Veneto that experts say resembles a Madonna by Nicolò de Stefani. Another noteworthy painting is the Madonna on clouds surrounded by angels from the late 17th to early 18th century by an unknown artist. Also worth seeing is the statue of Saint Martin on horseback placed above the side door and dating back to 1800, and the stone statue of Saint John Nepomuk located in the niche opposite. A Madonna by Zanderigo and a more recent statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are prominently displayed on either side of the altar.
