Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario

The parish church of Pieve d’Alpago, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, has been built since the year 1185. The portico of the church is mentioned in the year 1340 during the investiture of Giacoma da Bongaio, wife of Endrighetto, who came into possession of the county of Bongaio. However, this church was destroyed by the earthquake of 1348. The church was rebuilt and again leveled by another earthquake in 1873.

The reconstruction was long and laborious because the people were busy rebuilding their own homes. The new church was completed by 1879, recovering all reusable material from the rubble of the collapsed one; the frames of the windows of the sacristy and two altars inside still bear witness to the ancient church. The last structural intervention on the church of Pieve d’Alpago dates back to after the earthquake of 1936, which saw an essential variation to the project by architect Segusini, in which the nave was lowered by an entire floor while the apse was renovated in its original form. Four niches slightly protrude from the nave, housing the side altars. Over the years, two semi-circular wings were added in the style of the apse, where to the left of the main altar is the sacristy, while to the right a chapel for small winter functions was placed.

The main altar of the parish, made of polychrome marble, was assembled using the upper part of the altar from the ancient church, complete with all the decorative figures around the tabernacle, resting on a new marble base. In the apse's crescent, Saint Anne, Saint Joachim, and the Madonna are depicted in a painting by Della Caletta, as well as the painted coffers of the dome. On either side of the altar are two beautiful painted wooden statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul by the sculptor Francesco Martiner of Ortisei. The painting above the main altar featuring the Madonna, Child, Saint Dominic, and Saint Catherine has been attributed to the Venetian school of the 1600s. The two frescoes in the presbytery depicting Jesus driving out the profaners of the Temple and Jesus among children are by Luigi Vardanega, as are the four evangelists frescoed on the pendentives of the dome.

The altar dedicated to Saint Anne includes the statue of the Saint with Angels by Brustolon and his School, while the altar with the statue of the Madonna, to whom the church is also dedicated, is the work of Zanderigo. The painting placed above the right lateral door, depicting the Virgin, Saint Rose of Lima, Saint Dominic, and the Christ Child with Angels, is by Gaspare Diziani. The statue of Saint Anthony on the altar to the left upon entering is by sculptor Zanderigo and was salvaged from the old church, while a beautiful altarpiece depicting Saint Gall along with Saints Cosmas and Damian is found on the right altar. Documents from a restoration by Professor Lazzarin attribute this painting to Cesare Vecellio or his school, while a comparative study from a few years ago described the altarpiece as painted by Nicolò De Stefani. The church has several wooden works by local carving artists such as the pulpit by Luigi Rossi from Villa, the confessionals, and the baptismal font by Umberto from Pos di Torch. Of notable value is the Pugina organ from 1928 located in the choir. The paintings of the baptismal font are by the Roella brothers from Garna. The bell tower, external to the church, dates back to the 16th century, has a base made of stone blocks and exposed masonry, is about 36 meters high, and has a belfry with two-lobed arches finished in marble. The octagonal covering lantern with single-arched windows has a stone roof. The bell tower has never suffered damage from the disastrous earthquakes that have occurred over the years.
